What causes computer glitches?
Computer glitches can be very frustrating at times, but what exactly causes them? It turns out it could be for a variety of reasons.
"Computer glitches are often only a temporary disruption. They can have a wide variety of causes, although the most common causes are errors within the operating system, defects in a piece of software, or problems created by computer bugs or viruses." - wonderopolis.org.
What is the "Glitch Effect"?
If you love glitches then you might want to check out this niche art form. "Glitch Effect" or "Glitch Art" is the practice os using digital or analog errors as a form of artwork.
Glitch-artists will often artificially corrupt digital data or physically manipulating electronic devices to realize their works.
What is the difference between glitch and bug?
The terms "bug" and "glitch" are often used interchangeably, there is an important difference between them.
"A glitch is a short-lived fault in a system. ... A software bug is an error, flaw, failure or fault in a computer program or system that causes it to produce an incorrect or unexpected result, or to behave in unintended ways." - gaming.stackexchange.com.
15 funny examples of computer glitches
So, without further ado here are 15 funny examples of glitches out there on the web. Trust us when we say this list is far from exhaustive and is in no particular order.
1. When Windows attacks!
Long ridiculed for its less than completely glitch-free products, Windows can produce some funny errors at times. Here is a prime example.
How on Earth did this happen? A quick restart should solve the problem, at least for now.
2. This is a total scandal!
Whatsapp has become a very popular messaging service since its inception a few years back. Normally perfectly stable, except for the odd outage, it is not immune to Windows-level glitching.
Here is a prime example. We must admit it is a total "skandal."
Though on reflection we are not entirely sure this isn't a cropped image.
3. The never-ending download
It's always nice to be given an estimate of download time when grabbing a file, but this one "takes the Mickey." Nice to see that Opera doesn't seem to think the user has anything better to do until the end of the Universe.
4. Windows strikes again!
The fancy new computers we got for work show the cursor on the wrong spot. Also rendering windows on both screens is hard. from r/softwaregore
This poor unfortunate soul had some serious Windows-related glitches with their new work computer. Not only does the cursor not function properly, but they are having some interesting issues when attempting to render on two monitors.
To be fair someone in IT might have been having a bad day.
5. The AI assistant from hell
Every time I click her she becomes more terrifying from r/softwaregore
Alice, an AI assistant from an app called Replika, is normally intended to help improve mental health and social abilities. The problem is that this glitch might just have the opposite effect of its intended purpose.
Every time this user clicks on Alice's face it leads to some, interesting, outcomes. What the hell?
6. Something doesn't seem to add up here
This screen time logging app is in desperate need of some debugging. Quite how the recorded totals are meant to add up is anyone's business.
Whatever, not our problem.
7. The incredible battery that charges in the future!
This device's battery is incredible. It appears that through some form of technology we could never hope to understand, it can be charged in the future!
Thanks to this tech you'll never need to worry about your battery running out.
8. This child's toy might be a little confusing for young learners
Kids educational toy. Nearly every card was hilariously wrong. from r/softwaregore
Seriously? Isn't this game supposed to be helping children learn new things?
Do we wonder if the manufacturer actually quality checks their products before shipping? Well at least it is entertaining for adults so it is probably money well spent.
9. Yet another funny Windows glitch
So this makes total sense, thanks to Microsoft! For some reason or another, this device cannot continue its setup because it is connected to the internet.
But in a sense, this isn't completely untrue. Windows, as any user knows, is never done updating. And usually when it least convenient like an urgent meeting.
Damn you Microsoft!
10. Here are some crazy skateboarders
THPS2 No-Skateboard Softlock from r/glitches
A list of funny glitches wouldn't be complete with some of the classic glitches spat out by computer games from time to time. Here is a prime example.
To be fair this might be the most entertaining part of the game.
11. That's one crazy parachute
Old Beta glitches were the best from r/glitches
Beta versions of games are always ripe for the glitch picking. This one is pure gold.
We do hope that is an NPC and not a real player. That would be really annoying very quickly.
12. Well that's one way to hold a gun
This is probably one of the most interesting ways we've seen a computer game character hold a gun. Unconventional but if it works who are we to judge?
13. Playing chess with yourself is the easiest way to win
This is what happened when I tried to play chess against myself from r/glitches
This chap found out how easy it is to win a game of chess when you play yourself on this app. It probably gets a little boring after a few games.
14. That's one well-rendered crazy wolf!
X-Post from r/AssassinsCreedOdyssey from r/glitches
This chap found an interesting bug in Assassin's Creed: Odessey. We've seen dogs chasing their tail in the real world but this takes it to a new level.
15. Must have been something he ate?
what. from r/glitches
And finally, this glitch is pure gold. Quite what this NPC is supposed to be doing is anyone's guess!
